Town Seeks New Members for Commission on Disabilities
The Town of Agawam is seeking new members for the Commission on Disabilities to assist in the integration and participation of people with disabilities in the City of Agawam.
Said commission shall consist of not less than seven nor more than nine members appointed by the Mayor. A majority of said commission members shall consist of people with disabilities, one member shall be a member of the immediate family of a person with a disability and one of said commission shall be either an elected or appointed official of the city or town. The terms of the first members of said commission shall be of one, two, or three years, and so arranged that the term of one-third of the members expires each year, and their successor shall be appointed for terms of three years each.
The Commission Functions are:
1. Advise and assist municipal officials in ensuring compliance with federal and state disability laws;
2. Review policies and activities of municipal departments and boards as they affect persons with disabilities;
3. Provide information, referral, advocacy and technical assistance to individuals, businesses and organizations in all matters pertaining to disability;
4. Coordinate the activities of other local groups organized to meet the needs of persons with disabilities.
The Agawam Commission on Disabilities will meet the second Thursday of each month at the Agawam Library, 750 Cooper St., Agawam, MA 01001.
