For the month of November, the Agawam Public Library will be displaying on the lower level walls and in the downstairs case, Joseph P. Ryan’s collection of memorabilia of President John F. Kennedy. This exhibit will be in memorial of the president’s fiftieth anniversary of his death this month.
Some of the items in the exhibit include: a Springfield newspaper dated November 23, 1963, a memorial plate of President and Mrs. Kennedy, several hardcover books, a display case of JFK half dollars, a magazine from the Saturday Evening Post with a Norman Rockwell portrait, a JFK coloring book, three pins from the 1960 election, first day of issue program of the 13 cents stamp of President John F. Kennedy, Brookline, Massachusetts, and miscellaneous publications. The display will also include U.S. first day covers of the following stamps of President Kennedy: 5 cents stamp, 13 cents Prominent American Series, 11 cents airmail envelope, and 13 cents airmail envelope. Commemorative stamps and first of covers from several countries will also be shown.
Joseph P. Ryan was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from technical high school and served in the Army National Guard. He moved to Agawam in 1962 and married Janice Dumond. They have four children. Joseph spent his career working as a tool and die maker, and retired from Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut after 42 years. Upon his retirement, Joseph joined the Lower Pioneer Stamp Club. Since that time he has been collecting stamps, first day covers, coins, and other memorabilia of President John F. Kennedy.
