MassDOT invites you to participate in a Design Public Hearing to learn more about the proposed Interstate 91 (I-91) Viaduct Rehabilitation Project in Springfield. The hearing is on Tuesday, May 20, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, at the Basketball Hall of Fame, 1000 Hall of Fame Avenue, Springfield.
The proposed project will replace the bridge deck using accelerated bridge construction techniques. The proposed bridge cross section will be similar to the existing bridge width and is limited to the mainline of I-91 NB and SB, including the I-291 ramps. The final bridge will have a wider left shoulder, three travel lanes and wider right shoulder. MassDOT is also proposing bridge drainage system improvements that will improve water quality in the Connecticut River. Construction on this project will take place in two phases with two travel lanes in each direction being open for the duration of the project. On and off ramps within the work area will be closed to provide for construction room and to enhance both driver and construction safety. Regional traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge and local traffic will be maintained on the surrounding city streets, including East and West Columbus Avenues.
MassDOT has been working closely with the City of Springfield, local and area businesses, public safety officials and many who live and work in the city to gather information and work out alternative travel routes.
The purpose of the hearing is to familiarize the stakeholders with the proposed project, present the design plans and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions and offer comments. The plans will be available for review at 6 pm, before the start of the hearing.
Written statements and other exhibits in place of, or in addition to, oral statements made at the Design Public Hearing regarding the proposed undertaking should be submitted to Patricia A. Leavenworth, P.E., Chief Engineer, MassDOT, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, Attention: Bridge Project Management, Project File No. 607731. Such submissions will also be accepted at the hearing. Mailed statements and exhibits intended for inclusion in the public hearing transcript must be postmarked within ten (10) business days of this Public Hearing. Project inquiries may be emailed to email@example.com.
