Town of Agawam Becomes Dementia-Friendly Community

Agawam, MA, August 1, 2016—Mayor Richard A Cohen will announce that the Town of Agawam is one of the first dementia-friendly communities in Massachusetts. Mayor Cohen will deliver a proclamation during The Virtual Dementia Tour, which is being held at Heritage Hall West on Wednesday, August 10th from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The Virtual Dementia Tour is a free 15-minute experiential and educational opportunity that allows participants to walk in the shoes of a person living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

The goal of Agawam becoming a dementia-friendly community is to make our residents and businesses more aware of how dementia affects those afflicted and their families and, most importantly, how to respond to situations where dementia symptoms manifest themselves. “Dementia affects so many families not only in our community but throughout Massachusetts and we think it’s important to educate the public on how this debilitating disease affects people and their families,” said Mayor Cohen.

To schedule a free 15-minutes virtual dementia tour, residents and businesses are encouraged to contact Melinda Monasterski, Heritage Hall West at 413-333-2428.
