Dear Agawam Resident,

After a joint meeting of The Agawam Beautification Committee and The Inspection Services Department it was determined that many residents are unaware of the Agawam Zoning by-Laws in regards to signs on Town property, recently amended by the Agawam City Council, TOR-2006-11. This letter is to help make you aware of Chapter 180-84 entitled Prohibitions which states that private signs on Town property are prohibited. This includes the “tree belt” area, street corners, telephone poles, and any other location that is not private property. Anyone repeatedly found to be in violation of the above referenced by-Law will be subject to Section 180-76C, non-criminal ticketing. Each day on which a violation exists shall constitute and be deemed a separate offense.

Also, please be aware of Chapter 155-15B.2 entitled Sidewalks and Tree Belts. The tenant or occupant of any real estate in the town, which abuts on any public or private way in the town, and in case there is no tenant or occupant, the owner of such real estate, shall keep that portion of the public or private way, commonly known as the “sidewalk” and the “tree belt,” mowed, and free and clear of all litter, debris, noxious weeds, brush, any other kind of rubbish and automobiles, and shall maintain the same in a clean and sanitary manner, and also have uninterrupted clear vision at all intersections. Therefore your “tree belt” and “sidewalk” must always be maintained. Anyone repeatedly found to be in violation of the above referenced by-Law will be subject to Section 155-16.1, non-criminal ticketing. Each day on which a violation exists shall constitute and be deemed a separate offense. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Inspection Services Department.

Please help us in continuing to make Agawam a more beautiful and attractive place to live, work and visit.

We thank you for your cooperation.
