For Immediate Release
Mayor William P. Sapelli and the Agawam City Council announced a temporary permit extension of the outdoor dining initiative for 2021 to assist establishments in the recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayor Sapelli commented that the temporary extension will give Agawam businesses the opportunity to take advantage of the coming warmer weather, provide a safe and enjoyable dining experience, and prosper as the pandemic protocols abate. Mayor Sapelli added; “Our locally owned businesses are crucial to the economy and the extension of outdoor dining will position them to be able to rebound from the pandemic. They did a great job last year and we hope it continues this year.”
Eating establishments may apply for an outdoor dining permit through the Office of Inspection Services. The temporary permit will last until November 1, 2021. All seating plans and capacity limits must still follow state COVID guidelines and temporary structures like tents will need to comply with state building codes.
City Council President Christopher C. Johnson remarked that the City Council is focused on supporting small businesses and assisting their recovery from the last year. “The City Council proudly supports outdoor dining as another tool in the toolbox for businesses to be able survive and thrive. And it is crucial to allow them to remain competitive with other communities.”
Any businesses seeking to apply for a temporary dining permit or more information should contact the Inspection Services Department at 786-0400 ext. 8633 or amandab@agawam.ma.us. Businesses seeking to serve alcohol outdoors must contact the Liquor Commission at MMcCarthy@agawam.ma.us.
